Introduction

I am 34 years old and live in Perth Western Australia. My family and I have recently become very interested in freshwater crayfish, so we spend a lot of time collecting the local species from dams and drains on the block (we live on a turf farm on the outskirts of Perth).
When I tried to gather information from the internet about some of the less well known species I discovered that there is very little detail available on such creatures as Koonacs and Gilgies.

As we gather information I will post it to this blog to fill the information gap.

Below is a picture of our main display aquarium with the following crayfish species;

Large black - Marron Cherax cainii.
Blue marron - Cherax cainii.



We also have some other species of koonac and gilgie and some yabbies, both normal and blue yabbies. I will post images of them as I identify each species
The yabby or yabbie could be either Cherax destructor or Cherax albidus. We have a blue yabbie that seems to be slightly different to the other yabbies. As we purchased the blue yabby from a pet shop perhaps it is different.



Recently we caught some new species of Koonac. I will post information and photographs about the new species as I identify them. Probably I will need to speak to the department of fisheries.
